From Poetry to Romantasy: My Writing Evolution

We did it! Ink, Blood, & Prayer officially hit the bookshelves July 17th. It was a mad rush from early January where I started compiling all these poems into a poetry anthology, to signing with Bluebonnet Books, to everything necessary to get the poetry anthology ready for publishing. Marketing, and finally, launch day.

Clearly I needed a staycation. So I did exactly that. I’ve been absent from social media (other than personal) for a month. Just over. It gave me the breather I needed and allowed me time to pivot my life around to healthier habits.

I am refreshed and ready to go again!

But what does that mean?

A potential new book is currently being read by my publisher. I don’t know where it will end up going, but for now, I can sit back and relax and know there’s nothing else I can do for Where the Music Finds Us right now.

Sitting back and relaxing is not my style though.

On top of so many new things in my personal life, I have picked up pen and paper again. I am currently drafting a romantasy novel and have a couple others swirling around in my head space.

What Does Romantasy Look Like In This Story?

  • Forbidden love
  • Mythical world (this one is set in my world, Lysanthia)
  • Factions
  • Upheaval
  • Maybe a happy ending? (I sure do love some sweet, sweet closure)

The important thing this time around is to give myself space. Forgive myself for the days I don’t post on TikTok. Forgive myself if I don’t write 250 words a day.

This time, I’m relaxing. I gave myself a rough draft due date of March 1, 2027. Over a year! It is so important to me to learn balance this time.

Where the Music Finds Us

Writing Where the Music Finds Us was a seven week hypo-manic journey. I am proud of it. Yet, I also wonder how it would have turned out if I had given it my time.

I was obsessed with the characters; and, after my third round of edits, I decided to give it some space. When I tried to pick it up again, I hated every inch of it. Writers, amiright?

I handed it off to the wonderfully talented Chelsea, owner of Bluebonnet Books, and we will see what happens with it. For now, I will write bits and pieces (and maybe not all in order at once).

What is Where the Music Finds Us About?

  • Polyamory and queer love
  • Found family
  • Addiction recovery
  • The arts as a force of healing

Current Reads

On to other news, I am currently re-reading The Virgin Suicides by Jeffrey Eugenides. This was my favorite book in 2012 when I first discovered it and I am already enraptured by the unique storytelling dynamic that Eugenides employs.
